SeSaMe Seminar by Professor Amit Sheth
Title: Citizen Sensor Data Mining, Social Media Analytics and Applications
Speaker: Professor Amit Sheth
Date & Time: 25th February 2014 (Tue), 11.30am – 12.30pm (networking lunch after the talk)
Venue: Auditorium, iCube building
Abstract: With the rapid rise in the popularity of social media (1B+ Facebook users, 200M+ twitter users), and near ubiquitous mobile access (4+ billion actively-used mobile phones), the sharing of observations and opinions has become common-place (500M+ tweets a day). This has given us an unprecedented access to the pulse of a populace and the ability to perform analytics on social data to support a variety of socially intelligent applications - be it for brand tracking and management, crisis coordination, organizing revolutions or promoting social development in underdeveloped and developing countries. This talk will review the understanding and analysis of informal text, especially microblogs (e.g., issues of cultural entity extraction and role of semantic/background knowledge enhanced techniques) and also on how Twitris, a comprehensive social media analytics (social intelligence) was built. The anaIysis capabilities of Twitris will be described along three dimensions [1] – i) spatio-temporal-thematic, ii) people-content-network and iii) sentiment-emption-intent, coupled with technical insights. This will be achieved through the identification of computational techniques and real world examples, using Twitris live demos http://analysis.knoesis.org.
Bio: Professor Amit Sheth is an Educator, Researcher, and Entrepreneur. He is the LexisNexis Ohio Eminent Scholar, the Founder and the Executive Director of Kno.e.sis – The Ohio Centre of Excellence in Knowledge-enabled Computing. Kno.e.sis conducts research in Web 3.0 with a focus on Physical (sensor/IoT), Cyber, Social Big Data, and applications to healthcare and life sciences, cognitive science, material sciences, and defense intelligence. Wright State University is recognized as a top organization in the world on World Wide Web in research impact as a result of Kno.e.sis’ research. With h-index of 83, Professor Sheth is one of the top 50 authors in Computer Science (10yr impact), among the top 2 in World Wide Web (10yr or all years) and among the top 25 authors (all years) in databases (based on Microsoft Academic Search top authors list for respective field). His research has led to several commercial products, many real-world applications, and two earlier companies with two more in early stages. One of these was Taalee/Voquette/Semagix, which was likely the first company (founded in 1999) that developed Semantic Web applications and application development platforms.
