N-CRiPT Public Seminar: Privacy Issues in IoT Applications

Speaker: Associate Professor Biplab Sikdar

Date & Time: Friday 23 October 2020, 3.00pm – 4.00pm

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way we work and live. Consumer and industrial devices ranging from home appliances, factory equipment, smart automobiles, to medical implants are now connected to the Internet, collecting and processing large volumes of information. The efficiency and convenience brought about by these devices and their data also come with unintended consequences. Much of the data collected by IoT devices are sensitive data that can leak private information about individuals and organizations. This talk will explore some of the unintended privacy concerns that stem from the use of IoT devices and applications. We will also explore how adversaries target these devices and applications to extract sensitive information. The talk will conclude with a discussion on possible solutions, as well as the need for technological and policy-related frameworks for privacy.
