NUS News interviews Prof Kankanhalli on addressing data privacy

Amid encroaching practices of big technology companies on personal data, Professor Mohan Kankanhalli, Director of N-CRiPT, spoke of his focus on finding robust solutions to safeguard privacy and security of data while maintaining its utility for the benefit of society. To this end, he mentioned Centre’s aim to study privacy in a comprehensive manner by examining the life cycle of structured, as well as unstructured, data, and develop technologies to preserve true privacy at individual and organizational level.

Professor Kankanhalli also highlighted Risk Pulse Monitor which is a project being worked on by the Centre, with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk. The Monitor mines data from social media platforms to visually present a general sense of society’s prevailing concerns which can then inform policy-making and implementation among other possible uses.
